Musings, Day Eight

“Being happy is knowing how to be content with little.” –Epicurus

I believe I have already addressed this topic. It comes down to quelling avarice in one’s mind. But I do appreciate the wording here; that being happy is knowing how to be content. I have always considered “happiness” to be rather too strong for my own use. But “contentedness” is something to which I believe I can aspire.

I am not happy that I no longer have a house in which to keep my possessions. I am not happy that my books and CDs, my exercise equipment, my toys, and other amenities are beyond my reach in storage. But nothing is forever. And I may be unable to access my things, but they aren’t lost to me, either; they’re in storage. Perhaps it is all practice ahead of the day I must truly lose everything? For now, all is in a kind of murky limbo, neither lost nor accessible. What difference is there, really?

But, as it is beyond my control to do anything about the situation, I can refrain from obsessing. I can be content.

About Michael Butchin

I was born, according to the official records, in the Year of the Ram, under the Element of Fire, when Johnson ruled the land with a heavy heart; in the Cradle of Liberty, to a family of bohemians. I studied Chinese language and literature at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. I spent some years in Taiwan teaching kindergarten during the day, and ESOL during the evenings. I currently work as a high school ESOL teacher, and am an unlikely martial artist. I have spent much of my life amongst actors, singers, movie stars, beautiful cultists, Taoist immortals, renegade monks, and at least one martial arts tzaddik. I currently reside in Beijing's Dongcheng district
