So. We’re at war. I can understand why Israel would want to take Iran on; after all, they were the ones who supplied and trained the Gazans for the October 7th pogrom. They continue to supply and finance Hezbollah, with whom Israel has been at war for years.
That does not puzzle me. What puzzles—no, angers me—is Trump committing the United States to this war.
Now, I say this as a Jew, and a Zionist, and someone who thinks Netanyahu should have been put in prison a long time ago for fraud, breach of trust, bribery, and trying to make the judiciary subservient to the executive. I also say these things as an American citizen.
Trump’s attacks on Iran strike me as having been unplanned. It feels as though he saw what Israel did (or was planning to do), and like the toddler Der Orangefarben Fuhrer is. “Me, too! Me, too! I wanna make boom-booms, too!” And of course, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that Trump is desperately trying to distract from the fact that he is (allegedly) a sexual predator, a child rapist, and a child murderer. –At least, the files (and survivors who have been speaking out) give credible evidence that this is so.
And another thing that angers me beyond words again, is that the Executive has no right to declare war. That office is the purview of the Legislature. However, since no one has even attempted to hold the Orange Menace to account for any of his actions, he feels free to simply ignore the law. And when the law is not enforced, then the law is irrelevant. It’s a dictatorship, aided and abetted by the Republican party, and those Democrats too cowardly to do…well, anything. During the years that Republicans were in the minority in government, they nevertheless managed to hinder, block, deflect, and stymie almost everything the Democratic party tried to do. Why do the Democrats not comport themselves likewise? Why do they not fight?
And I am aggravated again that so many of my people, in Israel and the Diaspora, seem to love and support Trump. He is not our friend! I used to sound the same warning about American Evangelicals. They are not our friends. What? Because he moved the American Embassy to Jerusalem? So what? Because he supported Israel’s fight against the Palestinian Arabs? So what? As George Carlin once pointed out, America loves bombing brown people. And, the right wing is no doubt catering to the large bloc of Jewish voters in the United States.
Now, if anyone wants to see my earlier thoughts on the Israeli-Palestinian problem, you can read my thoughts here, and here, and here. I have become far more hawkish on the issue. And I have very dark thoughts about what I would like to see happen. I am tired of the libels, and the lies, and the deceptions, and the fact that the monsters of the Right Wing are the ones defending us, and that those on the left swallow wholesale whatever claims, true or not, fed to them by our enemies.
I wrote this post to express my annoyance with my government, not about Israel’s actions. If anyone wants to debate that, I have no problems with it. Question and criticize anything you like about Israel. There is a lot to criticize, I am sure. Just as with any government. The only red line I have is Israel’s right to exist.
